A Safe Space for Burmese Refugee Children

Updated: Aug 19

The Burmese refugee children who arrive at the Mae Sot Learning Center have all faced a harsh and dangerous environment marked by war in their homeland. Many have endured the terror of bombings, gunfire, and the heart-wrenching loss of loved ones. Living in a war zone meant constant fear and uncertainty, with no safety in their daily lives. They had to be vigilant every step of the way just to survive.

In such conditions, these children suffered from hunger, a lack of basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. Some have lost their parents or relatives to the violence of war, or have been separated from their families, forced to travel alone. Living through these experiences has robbed them of the childhood they deserved, one filled with learning, growth, and happiness.

However, everything changes when they reach the Mae Sot Learning Center. This center provides a safe haven, a stark contrast to the dangerous environments they escaped. Here, the children no longer need to worry about being attacked or experiencing violence. They can sleep peacefully, without the fear of bombs or gunfire disrupting their rest.

Beyond physical safety, the Mae Sot Learning Center offers love and care. The children receive support not only in education but also emotionally. The teachers and caregivers are there to listen to and understand the pain these children have endured, helping them to regain hope and confidence.

While in their homeland they faced danger and loss, at the Mae Sot Learning Center, they are given the opportunity to grow in a safe environment. They receive education, develop life skills, and learn about God and the new hope that will help them move beyond the pain of their past with strength and resilience.
